It's My Party And I'll Cry If I Want To!

Yes, I really am getting old. Luckily, I have a fabulous husband who takes my mind off of getting older. He does say I walk slower than dark, whatever that means, but maybe I can just say it is old age :)

So, on with my birthday story: Jason took me out to the Heartland Restaurant in Saint Paul. It is a very contemporary restaurant. The menu actually changes daily! The chef/owner buys from local farmers. The reason the menu changes daily is because the menu is based off what was delivered to his restaurant that afternoon. There was an interview and the chef/owner said at noon on any given day a farmer can come to his restaurant and pull out a rabbit or a wild boar and then he comes up with a menu for that evening based on the wild boar or the rabbit etc. It was definitely a little different. I wish I would have taken the menu so I could tell you exactly what we had. Unfortunately the rabbit was all out by the time we got there :( lol We both had the Fauna tasting menu. It was a little bizzare, maybe a little too contemporary for us, but it was nice to try something new.

I think we both agreed that we did not like the amuse or the appetizer. The amuse is the dish, or a small tasting, that is served before the appetizer. It was a chicken liver on some sort of a tort, it was about the size of a quarter, and actually I didn't mind it so bad, because the cranberries hid the taste of the chicken liver. The appetizer was foi gras, and to be honest, I wonder why this is a delicacy. I found it to be rather blah tasting. It was more of a textural thing for Jason and me. We both found the texture to be the same as eating fat. It wasn't appealing, but it was served, as usual, on a piece of toast. The entree was a wild boar steak with green beans and we also ordered the Russian potatoes. It was excellent. I was a little hesitant about the boar, but it was really nice and tender. The dessert was goats milk something. It tasted just like ice cream and was layered between very small layers of cake. I couldn't eat it all. I was completely full.

I didn't bring my camera to Heartland, but you can check it out here if any of you are brave enough :)

Not "walk slower than dark," what I say is "move at the speed of dark." ;)
