Grandma's in the Hospital & We Make Pies!

So the title does sound a little mean, doesn't it? That isn't actually what happened, Grandma had her knee replaced on Friday. She had the left knee replaced approximately 2 years ago and after suffering pain in her right knee, she signed up to get that one replaced too.

I went down to Mom & Dad's on Saturday morning and met up with Mom and Nicole and headed to the hospital to see Gram. She was pretty loopy! She would constantly be in and out of sleep so we just had to have a conversation without her. She says she will never eat again, although she said the same thing 2 years ago and I think her appetite came back just fine after a few days. She doesn't even want to drink coffee! She says it is probably good though because she has wanted to go on a little diet for a while.

This time around she seems a little nicer. Mom says it is because she is in the Cannon Hospital and she knows everyone so she has to put on her "Cannon Face". She has to act like she's all loveable and perky. I will say she is pretty hilarious when she's cranky though, and who knew an 82 year old woman could curse...not only curse but do it in front of her grandchildren! Yep, that's my Gram.

Monday she was transferred into the Nursing Home where she will recuperate. Last surgery all the daughters had to take off work and be with her 24/7. There were so many hilarious stories that came from their time there! I think it will go much better with her in the Nursing Home this time around. Just try to imagine, my Gram taking any orders from her daughters....definitely not my Gram. She isn't a little shy thing....but we love her lots.

After being in the Nursing Home a few weeks she'll go back to her house (probably the end of October depending upon how she does). Hopefully with both her new knees she'll be much happier and more active.

Now on to the pie making! When we got back to Mom & Dad's after seeing Grandma I wanted to make some Apple Crisp and an Apple Pie! M&D have a lot of apple trees and Nicole had brought some she had purchased at Cub. Dad, of course, needed to show us that Nicole's apples were nothing special so we had an apple taste off. You really don't noticed how apples taste so differently until you eat about 5 different kinds at the same time.

Dad was gracious enough to go pick the apples. It took him quite a bit of time. The cows got out of their pen last week and instead of going for the grain or hay they went for the apples. There was not one apple on the ground and every apple at a cows height were completely gone, but they left some cow patties!

The three ladies (Mom, Nicole and I) were in the kitchen chopping up apples, making my apple crisp and pie and chatting. I will say my favorite time is just sitting in the kitchen chatting with those two. We can talk and talk and talk and talk. Just ask Jason, usually if I'm on the phone with one of them it goes over an hour...anything at 60 minutes or less is odd.

After we made the crisp and pie, we baked up the crisp and it was so good. We had a little vanilla ice cream with it. Yumm. The pie is sitting in my freezer. I cannot wait until it gets a little cooler outside so I can bake that up and get a little ice cream. I love fall.

You may be wondering where Jason was when I was making my pie? No? Okay then I'll end this post here :) /sigh

I suppose I can tell you that he went hunting up North again with Glen. They left at 7am and didn't return until 8pm! What a long day, but it was so nice outside. They actually tried a new trail near where we were last weekend.

Guess what? Jason got a squirrel! His first this season, and probably his first ever in his life. I was happy and a little nervous, because now that he had a squirrel it meant that I had to EAT IT!

Sunday we grilled the squirrel up, but we didn't know how long it would take and it ended up being a little chard. We both had a few bites of squirrel and I didn't die. It was actually good. It tasted like chicken, something between the white meat and the dark meat....so squirrel is like whark meat (if you combined white and dark meat).

I believe they have plans to keep small game hunting until the season is over or until it gets too cold outside. Next weekend they plan to go put their deer stands up...hard to believe November will be here and we might just be eating venison soon!
