Christmas Tree!

We braved the snow yesterday, December 1, 2007 to pick out our Christmas tree. My family tradition was always getting a Christmas tree a week or two before Christmas but I like getting into the mood early. Heck, I have been listening to Christmas Music on 102.9 WLTE since before Thanksgiving. Usually we go to Home Depot which is fairly close to our house and spend a fortune for a tree and a wreath, shove it in the back of our SUV and install it into our 1,000 gallon tree stand.

I noticed this year that St. Pascal’s Men’s Club was having a tree lot by their church, a few blocks away. We headed out early Saturday morning, around 9:00 am, yes that is early for some of us. It was horrible weather. It was snowing, then it would stop for a little sleet and back to snow again. We went to the lot and had a nice gentleman pick up the trees for us and even carried one tree to compare to another. I thought it was great service there, some thing we didn’t get at Home Depot. We actually bought a smaller tree. That was our compromise this year. Jason grew up with fake, artificial trees whereas I always had real trees. I love the smell of a real tree in the house. We always have bought real trees that were over 6′, except the one year in the condo when we had a 1′ fake tree and not one gift could fit under it, I digress. The St. Pascal’s man wrapped up the tree for us, I paid and by the time I was back out the man had it in our truck and we were ready to go. We both agreed that was a great experience. They were very nice and helpful, plus the money went to a great cause, and not just a big corporation.

We brought the tree home and started decorating it. It was so much fun to pull out all of our ornaments. Some were old that Jason and his mom made, some were from our first Christmas together and some were brand new that we picked out together. So many fun memories and really, isn’t that what the season is all about? It is about getting together with family and reliving memories and making memories. When did Christmas become such a material holiday? Jason and I both agreed to really cut back on gifts. I love giving gifts and seeing people open the gifts but it has gotten ridiculous. I would like a stressless Christmas and to just be with our family.
